By EDWARD PENTIN | The Vatican has issued a directive to a Polish diocese that emphasizes the freedom of priests to celebrate Mass in the extraordinary form whenever they choose. The Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei made the clarification in January in a series of responses to questions from a Polish diocese...

Why do titles of Mary end with the "-trix" suffix (as in Mediatrix, Genetrix, Coredemptrix)? The answer to this question is quite simple. In Latin, the masculine ending for an agent is "-tor" and the feminine ending for an agent is "-trix." For example, Christ is the Salva TOR ("Savior") and Redemp TOR ("Redeemer") of humanity.

Papstbruder... Witness?

Posted: 09 Mar 2010 01:43 AM PST

In a development eerily reminiscent of what 2002 unleashed on these shores, recent weeks have found the German church suddenly engulfed in a wave of allegations of sexual abuse going back decades, the revelations appearing to cast an ever-wider net.

Nihilism Reaches the Suburbs

Breaching the Resistance of the World

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 12:34 PM PST

I've written many times, albeit rather clumsily, on the notion that abortion prevents the absolute love of God, ever ancient, ever new, from entering into the world, and thus serves darkness, not light. I feel compelled to write more about that, in the coming days...

Memorial and Presence in the Eucharistic Body of Christ

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 09:00 AM PST

By Mark Shea | Before I became Catholic, I was taught in my old Evangelical group that, of course, the Catholic understanding of the Eucharist was so much hocus pocus and that the whole notion of the Host and the Cup actually being the Body and Blood of Christ was a lot of superstitious hooey. So when Paul warned the Corinthians...

The gospel according to Beck

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 01:41 PM PST

"I beg you, look for the words 'social justice' or 'economic justice' on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. Now, am I advising people to leave their church? Yes." -- Glenn Beck...

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 03:36 PM PST

After local media reported that the child of a lesbian couple was refused enrollment at an elementary school in Boulder, the Archdiocese of Denver told CNA that opposition to its decision comes from those "who disagree with the Church's position on homosexuality in general" and want an "excuse" to voice their opinion.
