Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, for He has risen even as He said

Indeed, the cure for death does exist. Christ is the tree of life, once more within our reach. If we remain close to him, then we have life. Hence, during this night of resurrection, with all our hearts we shall sing the alleluia, the song of joy that has no need of words. Hence...

How Jesus came forth from the tomb

Posted: 04 Apr 2010 07:46 AM PDT

St. Matthew alone tells us that the stone was still blocking the entrance of the tomb when Christ came forth. He says: "After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached...

Does the word 'Easter' have pagan origins? (from Venerable Bede)

Posted: 04 Apr 2010 06:22 AM PDT

Christ is risen! Alleluia! Basing their hypothesis on a passage of the Venerable St. Bede, some claim that the Anglo-Christians adopted the name Easter from the name of a pagan goddess: Eastre in Anglo-Saxon; Eostre in Northumbrian.

Why Christ Rose from the Dead: Aquinas' 5 Reasons

I posted on this on Easter a few years ago, but it's so good I had to do it again. I had wanted to write a fresher post on Easter but I just got back from teaching a class in Rome and I'm exhausted! Besides, Brant's last post was so great it seems that any Easter Sunday post other than a selection from someone like Aquinas would be anticlimactic!

WDTPRS - Vigil of Easter - HAPPY EASTER!

Posted: 03 Apr 2010 03:17 PM PDT

Our forty day Lenten journey has brought us to the ultimate festal day of the whole liturgical year. Hopefully we have all participated in the Sacred Triduum ceremonies of Thursday and Friday. We saw the priesthood and Eucharist instituted at Holy Thursday. A glimspe of Easter glory was given us with the singing of the Gloria .

Christos Voskrese - Christ Is Risen!

This delightful youtube video is a favorite of mine. One of our readers and occasional commenter, Dejan, (without a doubt my favorite Serb) provided the English translation. The words are from a poem by St. Nikolai Velimirovich who served for a time as the Rector of St. Tikhon's Seminary - truly one of the great Serbian saints of the modern era.

Rejoice, heavenly powers!

Sing choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God's throne! Jesus Christ, our King is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation! Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes for ever!

He is Risen! Truly, He is Risen!

Exultet! Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen! (Listen to the Great Chant of Easter* as you read, if you like) Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God's throne! Jesus Christ, our King is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation! Rejoice, O earth...

The Catholic-Bashing Telephone Game

Posted: 03 Apr 2010 01:59 PM PDT

You remember the game, "Telephone", don't you? It's fun enough when you're nine years old and the sentence, "Farmer Smith used to grow wheat, but now raises genetically-altered soy beans," turns into "Far as I can be the sweet tooth, the hot praises of gin and so-so trains.

Five Reasons I Love Jesus

Reposted from 2007 by request of Reader Mark: Five Reasons Why I Love Jesus 5) He's got a good sense of humor. In this I see I am joined by Julie at Happy Catholic, for pretty much the same reasons. I love the sort of loving, semitic and word-based humor on display in scripture. In Matthew, Chapter 14...

The world no longer cares about Attila the Hun, but it still hates Christ and His Church

Posted: 03 Apr 2010 01:02 PM PDT

St. Thomas Aquinas wrote that the Redemption was an even greater miracle than the Creation. I've often wondered just what he meant by that, and I think I'm starting to see. The human imagination can readily conceive of God creating the world. The human race has many creation stories and myths; every culture seems to have its own. But...
