Easter Week stunner: Legionaries shutter Southern Catholic College mid-semester.. Posted: 07 Apr 2010 11:30 AM PDT Southern Catholic College, the new Catholic college just outside Atlanta, Georgia, is suddenly shutting its doors because it's broke. The school was just taken over by the Legion of Christ this year, and the fact that the order is under investigation by the Vatican may have something to do with donors' reluctance to keep the scho.

Mass on the Move: The Hidden Mass on the Road to Emmaus Posted: 07 Apr 2010 08:15 PM PDT Today's Gospel of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13ff) does more than present a resurrection appearance. It also presents the Mass in seminal form as I will show. In doing this Luke and the Holy Spirit teach us that the Mass is the essential and most vivid way that we encounter...
Posted: 07 Apr 2010 02:14 PM PDT By Msgr. Owen F. Campion The Church teaches that artificial birth control is seriously sinful. Any priest who hears only a few confessions knows very well the widespread use of artificial birth control among Catholics. Priests also know that many Catholics receive holy Communion despite practicing artificial contraception.

Science Question from a Toddler: Life before birth Posted: 07 Apr 2010 08:34 AM PDT "Hello baby, is it dark in there?" Like reader jackie31337, who asked this question when she was a small child, scientists don't remember what life in the womb was like. If they want to know what a fetus can see—not to mention smell, hear, taste and touch—they have to go right to the source. Unfortunately...
Posted: 07 Apr 2010 12:02 PM PDT Mercifully, evil has not overtaken the pope or the Church. And the Catholic Church is not dying. There have been crimes. There are sins. But much of what is being reported on does not always live up to its billing. And the solutions pundits present are not all that they think they are.
Money paved way for Maciel's influence in the Vatican Posted: 07 Apr 2010 11:13 AM PDT In his time, the late Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado was the greatest fundraiser of the modern Roman Catholic church. He was also a magnetic figure in recruiting young men to religious life in an era when vocations were plummeting. Behind that exalted façade, however, Maciel was a notorious pedophile...
Posted: 07 Apr 2010 11:06 AM PDT One of the keys to Fr. Maciel's influence was money, and after the revelations of his sexual misbehavior, those who've been less than trusting of the Legion have long been waiting for the other shoe—the news of dubious financial dealings—to drop. Here at First Things...
Cleaning out the filth from the Church Posted: 07 Apr 2010 11:03 AM PDT The Pope's March 20 letter to the Irish Church made clear that Joseph Ratzinger is determined to clean out what he once described as "filth" in the Church, and determined to bring the Curia along with him in that cleansing. That there is filth to be cleaned up is not in doubt; much of that filth is decades old. There is no credible evidence, howev.
