Losing Our Sense of Duty

Today, we live in a culture in which men (in particular) no longer feel a strong sense to serve something greater than themselves. To serve one's country through military service is thought to be foolish-a task due only to the poor and uneducated among us. This kind of elitism is alive and well in this country, especially among the more liberal who are all too happy to have someone else's son or daughter defend their freedom. My wife and I have encountered it frequently, however I was shocked to encounter it from other Christians!

A Continuing Requirement

The story of Jonah shows us that the gospel-the good news that God relentlessly pursues sinners in order to rescue them-is just as much for Christians as it is for non-Christians. Jonah, who knows God, obviously needs divine deliverance as much as anyone else in the story. In fact, it's his destitution, not that of the Ninevites, that gets the most emphasis. That alone should be enough to convince us that God's rescue is a continuing requirement for Christians.
