Telephone Interviews
Many companies today use telephone interviews as a normal part of the hiring process, generally as a screening tool for first interviews. Because phone interviews are usually brief, it saves the company time. Also, if you are an out-of-town candidate, it saves you and the company the expense of traveling for a first interview. However, it's easy to ruin your chances for a job if you have an informal demeanor during a phone interview. We have some tips to help you stay alert and prepared to give a great phone interview.
First, remember that, even though the interviewer can't see you, you are still participating in an interview. Prepare mentally in advance for your phone meeting just as you would for a face-to-face meeting. One of the benefits of a phone interview is the ability to keep notes in front of you. Have your resume and cover letter handy so that you can refer to them if questions are asked from them. Also, make a cheat sheet. You will probably have some key points that you'd like to make during the interview, so make a list to help you stay on target.
Next, focus on your appearance. This may sound ridiculous, but psychologically if you look the part, you are more likely to sound like it over the phone. You don't have to get dressed up in a suit, but chances are if you are lying on the sofa in your pajamas, you will not sound very professional. However, if you are sitting upright at a table in a well-groomed outfit, you will be able to have a more professional demeanor.
