Posted: 27 Jul 2010 03:25 PM PDT James Martin, SJ from The Leadership Roundtable on Vimeo. Jesuit Father James Martin talks about the importance of joy in spiritual life and at the same time provides enough material for at least one night of stand-up at the Improv in this funny and informative address to the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management at the Wharton School in Philadelphia.
A Kenyan lesson in faith, politics, and the Christian future Posted: 30 Jul 2010 08:10 AM PDT Next Wednesday, Kenyans head to the polls to vote on a new national constitution. It's intended to ease the political and tribal tensions which erupted in violence in early 2008, leaving more than 1,000 Kenyans dead and some 300,000 displaced. The referendum is being closely followed all across Africa...
Goodbye, Old Legion. All the Powers of the New General Posted: 29 Jul 2010 11:00 PM PDT As the pope's delegate, Archbishop De Paolis has full authority over everything and everyone. For Corcuera, Garza, and the other heads of the congregation founded by Marcial Maciel, the end is in sight. But they're still resisting.
Posted: 30 Jul 2010 08:11 AM PDT Anne Rice, whose book Called Out of Darkness was a beautifully-written spiritual confession, has decided that she loves Christ but not Christians. She's neither the first nor the last to feel that way. Sometimes I do, too. Sometimes I hate myself as a Christian, because I do the thing so badly. Christianity is easy to do badly.
Singing nuns get death threats Posted: 30 Jul 2010 05:08 AM PDT Disturbing news out of France, about a group of nuns who made headlines recently: Benedictine nuns from a secluded convent in southern France have received death threats after winning a deal aimed at creating a chart-topping album, a newspaper reported on Thursday.
Offbeat: Was Pope Pius XII a closet Yankees fan? Posted: 30 Jul 2010 05:00 AM PDT This was sent in to me by a reader this week and it seemed too fantastic not to be true: My father was in a private audience with Pope Pius XII. He asked where my father was from (New York City) and the Holy Father then asked: "how are the Yankees doing?" I don't know, but it looks like the Holy Father's (holy) hands could throw a mean slider!
Is It Possible that St. Paul Was a "Poor Preacher?" A Brief Meditation on Superficiality Posted: 29 Jul 2010 09:07 PM PDT For many years, growing up, my usual image of St. Paul was of a bold preacher and teacher who went from town to town powerfully teaching and preaching on Christ. I imagined people mesmerized as he preached and took on his opponents. In the years since seminary however I have altered my view just a bit based...
A Cautionary Tale: Augustine, Aquinas, and Anne Rice Posted: 29 Jul 2010 05:24 PM PDT Less than five years ago author Anne Rice, most famous for her vampire novels, was named "Literary Convert of the Year" by National Catholic Register. She went on to write two books about the childhood of Jesus, both of them acclaimed quite widely by Catholics such as Peter Kreeft and others. Sadly, as you might already know...
Sneak Peak At There Be Dragons Movie Trailer Posted: 29 Jul 2010 02:41 PM PDT UPDATE at the BOTTOM The famous director of the movies The Mission and The Killing Fields, Roland Joffe, has just released a trailer teaser to his new film he is producing that encapsulates the early life of Saint Josemaria Escriva.
Did you hear the one about how Archbishop Burke was "promoted out" of the US? Posted: 28 Jul 2010 07:55 AM PDT That's what a great many of his Stateside critics would have you believe. But given the Archbishop's steady rise in prominence, influence, and his accumulation of real power within the Roman curia, I'd say his critics are really just whistling past the cemetery .
Posted: 29 Jul 2010 07:59 AM PDT 18 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Luke 12:13-21 The rich man of this Sunday's Gospel is blessed with a bountiful harvest. Rather than thanking God for this gift, he hoards the grain in his barns - his heart is possessed by his possessions. At the moment of death, the Lord calls him a fool, for he was not rich in what matters to God.

St. Martha: pulling apart a painting Posted: 29 Jul 2010 10:03 AM PDT In the National Gallery in London, you will find a painting by Velazquez entitled Christ in the House of Martha and Mary. I never fail to visit it when I visit that gallery. The painting - a variation on the bodegón or kitchen/tavern scene, and a Flemish combination of domestic and sacred scenes - is a bit of a puzzle. It has layers.
Anne Rice: "I quit being a Christian".. Posted: 29 Jul 2010 12:01 PM PDT The best-selling writer who made headlines with her dramatic conversion (or reversion) and wrote a popular book about her journey back to Catholicism, has changed her mind. She made the announcement on Facebook: "I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist.
QUAERITUR: birettiquette, revisited Posted: 29 Jul 2010 11:19 AM PDT And now for the really important things. From a reader: Dear Father, Can you point me (or ask your readers to help to point me) in the direction of a guide to the use of the biretta at Mass in the Ordinary Form ? There's much written about the EF but I can't find anything the GIRM, Elliott or the Ceremoniale which makes comment on the proper use.
