Common Job Search Mistakes - Resumes
This week we continue covering tips to help you avoid common mistakes made in the job search process. Here are a few more tips to help with your resume.
- Tell what you've done: Many hiring managers claim that the best resumes do not catalog a person's skills, but focuses on their accomplishments. Your resume should demonstrate what you've done for your current and previous employers. For example, explain how you exceeded your sales goals or demonstrate how you used your leadership skills on a team or committee. Regardless, use your resume as an opportunity to highlight your best accomplishments in your current and previous jobs.
- Spell Check: As obvious as it may sound, many resumes arrive in the hands of potential employers with spelling and grammatical errors. Don't rely only on your word processor's spell check; read over your resume several times, including your name and contact information, to make sure all spelling and grammar is correct.
- Get a Second Opinion: Have a friend or colleague review your resume for you. This goes hand in hand with the last tip. Not only will this help you find any typos, but it will also help determine if your resume is clear and easy to read. You may understand the information on your resume, but someone on the outside may have no clue what you've described.
